The news cycle pulls hard, and it's easy to wonder whether the work we do together is enough. And yet, I know that to move through darkness I have to let my eyes adjust to the light there is, and if needed, carry a torch. So here is our monthly torch—a gathering of stories and invitations from people and projects dedicated to stewarding this future. Not through grand gestures, but through the steady, often unglamorous work of innovation, transformation, and most importantly, connection. The kind of work that happens in kitchens and workshops and webinars and food forests. The kind that doesn't often make headlines, but is quietly, persistently changing what's possible. We hope something here calls to you. And if it does, follow it. That's how movements move. In community, with love, Eva Goldfarb on behalf of GEN-International We are trying something new. Almarte: Community, Ceremony & Healing the Land In the Dominican Republic, a community tends 120 hectares of land, transforming what was once cattle pasture into a thriving food forest. What began over fifteen years ago as the work of one of Almarte’s co-founders, Günther (focused on rebuilding soil and planting trees— more than 100,000 to date) has grown into a community-and-NGO-driven project. Around 60,000 of these trees are cacao, growing alongside mango, coconut, turmeric, vanilla, and passionfruit near Los Haitises National Park. What makes Almarte distinct is its founding vision: to create a regenerative cacao business that actively fuels the ecovillage movement. Co-founders Günther and Sascha — one inspired by studies at Tamera, the other stewarding permaculture land for over fifteen years — realized they could use entrepreneurial means to support the emergence of conscious communities and contribute to a post-capitalist future. Honoring tradition, the community processes ceremonial cacao without roasting. They own and work the soil they are healing, ensuring fairness for all life at every step. Through The Almarte Foundation, they are building both an ecovillage on site and a funding model to support the emergence of other regenerative projects. Volunteers learn permaculture firsthand, and day tours welcome visitors to harvest cacao and share ceremony on the land. Each purchase of Almarte’s ceremonial cacao supports this dual mission: tending their own community while strengthening the wider ecovillage movement. Support ecovillages through cacao!
