Elaine was more than a groundbreaking microbiologist - she was a teacher, mentor, and tireless advocate for soil health. Through her work on the soil food web, Elaine opened our eyes to the incredible life beneath our feet and inspired farmers, scientists, and students around the world to care for soil as the foundation of healthy ecosystems. She made complex science accessible, showing us that healthy soil is not just about crops - it's about communities, sustainability, and our shared future. Elaine's energy, curiosity, and generosity touched so many. She is survived by her husband, two children, two grandchildren, and a beloved granddog. Her family asks that, in her memory, we plant a tree or support the Soil Food Web Foundation to carry forward her life's work. Elaine leaves behind a legacy that will continue to grow - literally and figuratively - for generations to come.
